Spoon feeding babies pureed foo is unnatural and unneccesay according to recent reports in the national press, with one childcare expert warning parents feeding babies in this way could cause problems in later life.
Gill Rapley, deputy director of Unicef's UK Baby Friendly Initiative, said babies should be fed with breast milk or formula milk only until six months old, and then weaned onto solid food they can pick up themselves. This is advice that is also supported byt the World Health Organisation.
As a result of her findings, the former health visitor has developed her own feeding programme called "baby-led weaning".
Northampton mother Hannah Casey has been an advocate of the feeding programme since readin Gill Rapley's theory and for the last 6 months, has been using the method to wean her daugher, Erin, now aged 12 months.
The mother of two from Northampton
accepted conventional advice when weaning her first child, Jake, now
seven, but says that the new method has improved life for the whole
family.
She said: "I weaned my eldest the traditonal puree route, but waiting
until Erin was 6 months old made the experience so much more relaxed."
"We can all eat together at the table, I don't have to wait to eat my meal to spoon feed Erin because she can feed herself."
"Baby-led weaning was one of the best parental decisions I made."
"When I first read about baby led weaning it just made absolute sense to me and I researched some more on the internet."
"The problem is there isn't a lot of information out there and few
health visitors have heard about it, yet it is an extremely beneficial
and practical way of introducing solids for both baby and parents."
Carolyn Markham, chairwoman of the Northampton branch of the National
Childbirth Trust (NCT) said a baby's physical development meant that
six months was the best practical age to start weaning and runs classes
teaching new parents advice on weaning their babies.
She said "By the time babies are six months old they can sit up in high
chairs and feed themselves. They really like it because they set their
own pace.
"They have teeth at this gae and better motor skills. They canchoose what they put in their mouths and they have more control."
"The first few times they may play with the food and spit it out but
then they will start to experiment a lot more and at eight months will
be eating more."
"Lots of mothers really worry about it but leaving weaning until six
months means that food does not need to be pureed and babies can eat
whatever the rest of the family are eating which is moving away from
the idea we have in this country of feeding seperate foods to our
children."
